The seafood processing factory on Holt Road at Cromer is to finally close in August with the loss of 230 jobs.
A local campaign was launched in the hope that the factory could be saved but it had no success in changing the mind of a company with a turnover of £330m plus, that literally has ‘other fish to fry’ elsewhere. Young’s Seafoods went through a cynical PR process to raise hopes that the factory might remain in some form but their intention was obviously to close down the site to save money.
There is little hope that the employees will find other permanent work locally.
Let us hope that the North Norfolk District Council takes steps to ensure that the site does not become a derelict eyesore on the edge of the town.
